Project Overview
This hospitality project demonstrates the potential of PIT-To-Table, a recycled surface material featured within the MTRL Library material collection. Installed as restaurant tabletops, the project showcases how circular materials can be successfully specified in commercial dining environments without compromising on durability, functionality or design.
The tables provide guests with a practical dining surface while highlighting innovative approaches to material reuse and sustainable manufacturing.
The Challenge
Restaurant and café environments place significant demands on furniture and surfaces. Tabletops must withstand:
- Continuous daily use
- Food and drink spills
- Frequent cleaning and sanitisation
- Impact, abrasion, and wear
- Long-term aesthetic performance
The project required a surface that could meet these performance requirements while supporting sustainability objectives and demonstrating the value of recycled materials in commercial interiors.
The Solution
PIT-To-Table was selected for the restaurant tabletops, creating a durable and visually distinctive solution for the dining space.
The dark surface finish is complemented by a recycled aggregate edge detail that subtly reveals the material’s composition. This design feature celebrates the material’s origins, transforming waste-derived content into an attractive design element rather than concealing it.
The tabletops work harmoniously with the warm timber furniture and contemporary interior palette, providing a refined yet approachable hospitality setting.
Material Benefits
Circular Economy Principles
PIT-To-Table demonstrates how waste materials can be transformed into high-value commercial products, extending material life and reducing the demand for virgin resources.
Commercial Durability
Suitable for hospitality environments, the material offers the robustness required for everyday restaurant use while maintaining its appearance over time.
Unique Visual Identity
The exposed recycled content creates a distinctive aesthetic that differentiates the tables from conventional hospitality surfaces and provides a visible sustainability story.
Material Innovation
As part of the MTRL Library collection, PIT-To-Table represents a new generation of materials that combine environmental responsibility with practical commercial performance.
The Result
The completed installation demonstrates that recycled materials can deliver the quality, durability, and visual appeal expected within modern hospitality spaces.
By integrating PIT-To-Table into a real-world restaurant setting, the project provides a tangible example of how circular design principles can be applied in everyday commercial environments, helping designers, architects, and specifiers experience the material in use rather than as a sample alone.
