Introducing MTRL Library, Your Material Resource for Surface Design

The way materials are discovered and evaluated at the earliest stages of design is changing. As sustainability and performance become more central to specification decisions, architects and designers are looking for resources that allow them to engage with materials in a more considered and practical way. MTRL Library has been created in response to this shift.

Following our launch at the Surface Design Show 2026, MTRL Library has been introduced to the industry as a curated material resource designed to support architects, designers and specifiers as they explore innovative and sustainable surface materials through a direct and hands-on experience.

Tactile Way to Explore Surface Materials

MTRL Library has been designed as a physical, tactile environment where materials can be handled, assessed and understood in context. Instead of viewing samples in isolation or relying on digital representations, we encourage customers to experience surfaces through touch, visual comparison and close inspection of finish and composition.

This approach supports early-stage design thinking by allowing materials to be explored side by side and used as part of moodboard development. By working with materials in this way, designers can test ideas, refine concepts and build confidence in their material direction from the outset.

Curated with Clarity and Responsibility

Each material included within the MTRL Library has been carefully selected for its design quality, durability and environmental responsibility. The collection places a strong emphasis on recycled content, low-impact manufacturing processes and materials designed for long-term use within the built environment.

Clear and accessible information sits alongside each surface, helping designers understand how materials are made and how they perform. This focus on transparency supports more informed specification decisions, allowing sustainability considerations to be balanced naturally with creative intent.

Spotlight on Material Innovation

One of the materials that generated strong interest during the show was Smile Materials, a surface material developed using recycled waste streams to create a visually distinctive and highly durable finish.

Smile Materials stood out for its expressive surface character, where fragments of recycled content remain visible within the material itself. This openness around material composition resonated with visitors, offering a clear example of how sustainability can be embedded into the visual language of a surface rather than hidden behind it.

Its inclusion within the MTRL Library highlighted how recycled materials can move beyond purely functional applications and instead play a defining role in contemporary surface design. For many designers, Smile demonstrated how material storytelling, performance and environmental responsibility can be combined in a way that feels both honest and design-led.

Highlighting Innovation Across Surface Design

At launch, MTRL Library presented a considered range of materials from forward-thinking manufacturers working across recycled, natural and engineered surfaces. Together, these materials demonstrate how innovation within the materials sector is supporting more circular approaches to design and specification.

Rather than presenting an overwhelming volume of options, the library focuses on relevance and quality. Every material has been chosen for its ability to address real design challenges while responding to growing expectations around environmental responsibility.

Space for Learning and Collaboration

Beyond the materials themselves, MTRL Library functioned as a space for conversation, learning and collaboration throughout Surface Design Show 2026. Designers, specifiers and manufacturers were able to connect around shared questions of performance, longevity and responsible material use.

This exchange reinforced MTRL Library’s wider purpose as more than a material collection. It acts as an ongoing platform that supports material education and encourages deeper engagement with the surfaces that shape the built environment.

Discover MTRL Library

MTRL Library’s launch at Surface Design Show 2026 marks the beginning of an evolving resource for the design community. By placing touch, transparency and thoughtful curation at the centre of material discovery, the library offers a refined approach to surface selection that supports responsible specification and expressive design outcomes.
