The launch of MTRL Library at the Surface Design Show marked an exciting new moment for material-led design — and the response from the design community exceeded all expectations.
From the moment the doors opened, the MTRL Library stand became a natural gathering point. Throughout the show, it was filled with architects, interior designers, and specifiers drawn in by the energy of the space and the opportunity to engage with materials in a more tactile, thoughtful way. Conversations flowed easily, samples were handled and discussed, and the atmosphere remained lively from start to finish.
A design-first approach to material exploration
At the heart of the stand was a simple idea: materials deserve time, context, and storytelling. Sculptural forms, hands-on displays, and carefully curated collections invited visitors to slow down and explore. The mix of sustainable and recycled materials alongside bold, colour-led surfaces sparked curiosity and encouraged meaningful discussion around both aesthetics and responsibility.
Many visitors commented on the clarity of the concept and the refreshing focus on real-world application. Rather than overwhelming designers with endless choice, MTRL Library offered a considered edit — allowing materials to be understood, compared, and imagined within real projects.

Conversations that confirmed a need
The response throughout the show reinforced something the team strongly believes: the way designers discover and specify materials is evolving.
“We saw genuine curiosity and enthusiasm from designers who were excited to engage with materials differently,” the MTRL Library team shared. “The conversations we had throughout the show highlighted a clear appetite for a more intuitive and inspiring approach to material selection.”
Surface Design Show proved to be the ideal setting for this debut. With its highly engaged audience and emphasis on surface innovation, the event highlighted the growing importance of thoughtful, responsible material choices in contemporary architecture and interiors.
What’s next for MTRL Library
Following the show, MTRL Library is continuing conversations that began on the stand. Interest in future collaborations, deeper material exploration, and ongoing engagement with the design community has been strong — and this launch marks only the beginning.
As MTRL Library grows, its focus remains the same: to support architects and designers with curated collections, physical samples, and expert insight, making material selection more intuitive, inspiring, and accessible.
